How often should I change it?

Roughly every six months for most refrigerator cartridges. On hard water, six months is the honest number.
How do I find out which one I need?

Bring the old cartridge, or photograph the label inside your refrigerator door. Either one is enough.
Do I need a whole-house system?

It depends on whether you are on city water or a well, and on what is bothering you — taste, smell, staining or scale. Come describe the problem before spending money on hardware.
